How to Verify Google Webmaster Tools?

I am not sure how to verify my site with Google Webmaster tools. I have of course searched and found a few articles on how to do this, but they are all dated and not possible to accomplish in Ning anymore. It seems around October 2008 ning made it impossible to upload files, and I can't create a URL that Google needs, or add a meta tag.

Does anyone know how to accomplish this as of Feb 2009?

You just need to upload an HTML webmaster file to your root directory using WEBDAV. The HTML file is made for you in Webmaster when you are asked if you want to verify your site with a HTML file. It does work as long as you able to use WEBDAV.

Oh, ok thanks. The ning article on Webdav seems to indicate that it doesn't work anymore, but maybe they meant just that you can't upload PHP scripts anymore...

Actually I just tried to conntect via WebDav and it failed... are you sure that this still works?

I had to use 2 different computers but eventually I got it to work. I last uploaded a file a few weeks ago. You are right that Ning does not allow you to upload scripts but you can upload images, files, whatever to either the root directory or a created sub directory. It was frustrating for me also at one time until I switched computers and used a Vista machine.

There is an easy way by using the http://www.anyclient.com/applet.html no-install java client but make sure you put MYSITE.dav.ning.com and not mysite.ning.com

What if you have a private network, google cannot verify becuase "We've detected that your 404 (file not found) error page returns a status of 200 (Success) in the header."


I do not know how to verify with a meta tag, can any one help?

I have the same problem. Can't pass the verification.

I tried to connect to anyclient, but I don't know what username to put in the "connect" box..
I tried to type in the name of my network with my password, but it doesn't work.

I'm just getting started with all this... sorry if my question seems dumb :)

If your network is private, FORGET ABOUT GOOGLE!

Why would this site index a network that has nothing to offer an individual when searching the internet? Google will not crawl a site that is private.

If you want your site indexed, you will have to open it up for a few weeks if not more. You can open just the main page if you have designed your site correctly and this will be enough to improve your ranking on Google.

From my experience your site will have to be completely open to verify with Google. You CANNOT use the META verification.

I am an innocent disclaimer .
I want to bring to your notice that someone has uploaded infringed photos with few of my photos and other photos have been pasted from somewhere else under my name.The particulars have been made in ning.com, the offender had used my account and password in Ning and further joined a social network by the name of “thatvideosite” using URL: debonairblog.ning.com.
Since debonairblog.ning.com is under maintenance from May 27, 2009, we are unable to access the webmaster to delete the photos and account further. The updations have been recently made from 24 May, 2009 onwards.
please remove infringed material from debonairblog.ning.com (ning member 38)

they are not uploaded by me and i am innocent
i donot have idea to delete the photos from the blog site which was joined through my ning account -(member no.38)
thatvideosite with URL “debonairblog.ning.com” which has been created by someone and came our notice later.
Both accounts have been created by someone against my will using my password
Help the innocent in need.
It hurts my sentiments and my reputation. I am disturbed with this illegal act done by someone in lieu of revenge
