I think Ning is awesome functionally, but they totally dropped the ball in the visual customization department.
They should have tried something like they do over at shopify.com. It's a proprietary templating system, but you can totally customize it however you want.
The funny part was that when they started out Andreeson was talking about how this was "web 3.0" and this was the first truly programmable platform. There's nothing programmable here.
This is a hosted website. Period. SAAS. Nothin more nothing less. And given that, it's hard to believe that with all they've done right, they've nearly left out interface customization.
You'd think that with all that money, and all those great minds, someone would've spoken up at some point.
