you mean a ning?? we are building up- its 2 sites a bit complex.. and I ll not will do promotion here cause its just to support my fashionstart up international.
Thanks! To clarify, a WordPress.com account is hosted by WordPress. Kind of like a standard Ning account. My actual WordPress address is networksboise.wordpress.com but I use an actual domain name (networksboise.com) and direct it to the wordpress site. You could do the same with Ning or, for $4.95/month, you can use your actual domain name. WordPress has a similar option.
WordPress.org is actually an open, still free, version of WordPress. The difference is that you must use your own domain name and you or a third party need to host your site. They make the .com version more restrictive as it sits on their (wordpress) computers and they do not want untested stuff on their servers. As you host, or pay somebody to host, your site with a .org account, they don't care. FYI, I have a number of posts on my WordPress.com site regarding ... Wordpress.com :)
Thanks for the tips on the Ning master and the book! I may go on Amazon and get it.
On Ning if you pay to remove the adds, which I have done on one site, that gets rid of them but you are still limited in terms of what you can move over there which .... is pissing me off (smile). I do not think that there is a way for users to create pages on WordPress. Might be with permissions. However, you can identify users as "contributors" to your blog in which case, they can post to that. I am a "contributor" on another wordpress site but can only post to the blog.
It is important to keep in mind that I am talking about WordPress.com vs WordPress.org. With a .org account, I am guessing you can do about anything you want. I may or may not move over to that at some point. .org accounts are extremely powerful and flexible. You can not install 3rd. party widgets on .com accounts as you can with Ning. You can with .org accounts.
Thanks, Keith. Probably too much info on my Ning sites but I'm learning too. I came to this area to try to learn how to remove some of the restrictions on the right side bars. I am told that it can be done. Went to your wuzzywuz.com site. Nicely laid out! Not done on Ning or Wordpress?
I own and operate B2B networking groups. Right now I have two. We have been using WordPress.com when I just had the one - NetWorks! Boise but now have separate Ning sites for both groups at Networksboisebing.ning.com and networksboisebusinessminds.ning.com. These are public sites but membership is only approved for our formal members.
I just put the Ning sites up over the last 10 days and they are still under construction.
Thanks!
Craig
Does that help? I can't figure out how to do hyper links on this thing :)
