Ning Developer Docs

My main network is running code that's pretty out-of-date (3.1.1 I think) and I'm upgrading it to 3.3.6. I'm doing the merge manually since the Merge tool is giving me some problems.

It should be really simple since I only have a small amount of modifications on the site, so I take the new code, put in the small modifications I had before and upload the entire new code plus my mods right?

But when I test this on my test site, my site 'resets' after overwriting everything with the new code: all my configuration is gone.

So my questions are: I guess to avoid this I should just overwrite everything except for the widget configurations in /instances ? Would this work? Also, are there any dangers of losing other things like photos and videos members uploaded?

I'm just trying to make the upgrade as quick and painless as possible for my members.

Thanks!

I believe the widget-configuration files have ids in them which connect them to their respective data. Try looking for these and changing the new ones to the old values...or just keeping the old ones but looking at the new ones for any structural changes...

Also there is another set of widget-config xml files in xn_private (at least there was < version 3).

Keep in mind that the cache intrinsic in the code can be quite sticky so updates might not show up to easily... I'm not sure how to reset it...

There's not much documentation on these config xml files. As far as I can make out they are key in the connection of your network to the data...
