How can I add profile questions that can be answered by current members that will not automatically reset their profile to the defaults when they answer the new questions?

I've added new questions without a problem...

Either you do not understand my issue or I am doing something wrong. When I add new profile questions and current members decide to answer those all of their previous profile questions resort to the default answers, especially in the case of multiple choice questions.
