Ning is now limiting tracking code to a few lines, so this pretty much ends customization with javascript hacks?

this is really a shame. Ning networks feel so generic, and this was one of the few options left to do something interesting or custom.

There is no functional limitation. Just reference an external JS file in your analytics box, its better practice anyway, and the external file can be of any size needed.

oh, now im showing my amateur status. I thought they block PHP in there as well. no? or is there a way to pull in an external file in javascript? I guess its obvious there would be. lol

We have a tool at TheNingMaster.com that lets you manage your Analytics textbox content. Many Network Owners don't have access to a server to store an external JS file. There is no need for that if you use our tool.

Thanks for this answer. I added an external javascript to my network which I couldn't add to my network with reference an external JS.

Does the script just execute on it's own that way? I put some ad banner JS code in an external file and it doesn't seem to load.

Hi Bill, in this case, yes! The script just adding a playtagger to the song playlist. Maybe these informations will help you ... I am learning too. If you see here the JS reference is without a javascript TAG.

Get a hold of FireFox and the FireBug extension. There is a useful feature called "Console" which allows you to debug javascript and will help see where the errors are. Otherwise Javascript just fails silently and you cant see what is wrong.
