Ning Developer Docs

I have created a site (hookallotments.ning.com) and it has been running for a month now. However when i put terms like 'hook allotments ning' into Google, search cannot find it. What am i doing wrong? My site is open for anyone to join.

Please help. I am guessing this is a common problem, but i can't see anywhere in the forums a simple solution.

1. Google "get ranked on google",you will retrieve a million results.
2. Read them all, it only takes 3 months to read and digest and get started on.
3. Then start doing them one by one, which takes a year.
4. After a year you will be ranked roughly near the front page on your search term.

(seriously this is what it takes)
Thanks for toungue in cheek comment. I hear what you are saying, but...

For other sites that i have created (not on NING) i have not had this problem and when you put in key terms of the URL title in a search engine (ie here Ning, hook allotment), the sites always come towards the top of the list.

On a NIng site do i need to manully set some meta tags or create a site index or something. This is a serious question which i need a serious reply to.
There are two keys one is your domain and the other is your description. I have found that getting the keywords for search in the first 10 words of your description are key to any search and then, get a domain name that works for your search. If someone searches for hook allotments, they may find you, but if that is not what you want then buy a domain that would match your search and add this as a premium service.

Tags don't work well. I thought it was the meta data I needed, but found that it does not rank where I want it. Good Luck with this.
Thomas - Thanks for tip re description. I will try it. My domain name is 'right' i think.

I still feel there is something else wrong as I don't seem to get any listing whatsoever with 'hook allotment' as a search term. Note there are no other hook allotments in the world, so it is not as though others are coming up ahead of me. Google has clearly not spidered it for some reason.

Look up "add to search engines" and you'll see links for manually adding your site to Google, Yahoo and particularly DMOZ, which is the grandaddy of them all.

Get Google Analytics happening on your site too, that will help speed things up and get you noticed on Google.

Get as many inwards links from other sites as you can.
You need to have a 6-12% keyword density on the front page for the search terms you want to appear on by the way, which involves a moderate overuse of the words you want to appear on the search results for... which is why my "about us" on the front page is overly wordy.
Everyplace you reasonable can, you should be placing links that point to your site, with those terms associated with the link. Use your:

Twitter page
other blogs about that topic
profile pages
on forums about that topic
Myspace, Friendster, etc.
Craigslist ads
PR releases
Your Youtube page
Flickr comments about that topic...
on and on forever.

Make sure those words are in the title of your web site, and at the top of the page in text.
If there is a lot of competition, you may need a SEO friendly template in Wordpress or Joomla, one that pushes code and navigation links to the bottom of the page.
Nice.

A point to not as well, though not as important as the point above, is that INTERNAL links are gold too. Get as many internal links on your site to the front page of your site as you can. Even to the point of making links with one link per letter in a word.

Other things to consider:
Google Base - had a quick play but its pretty involved
Google Adwords - controversial but it might get you ranked higher

Twitter is king at the moment, for external links and rankings. Try to get yourself into Wikipedia as well.

I Have the same problem as Pete. I have also tried a lot of the things in these articles.

forget my keywords and descriptions, when I put my URL in, it doesn't show on Google. As pete says, this can't be right. Surely the googlebots are not indexing my site for some reason???

HELP!
