<div><br/></div>
Hello!<div><br/></div>
<div>As I mentioned last month, we're in the process of <a href="http://developer.ning.com/profiles/blogs/ning-developer-roadmap">enhancing the developer experience</a> on Ning.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>To kick things off, we'll soon be enabling the ability for Ning Apps to appear on the main page of a network. To take advantage of this new ability, you'll need to specify a 'home' view in your gadget's XML. For example:</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div><Content type="html" view="home"></div>
<div><![CDATA[</div>
<div><p>Hello, Home view!</p></div>
<div>]]></div>
<div></Content></div>
<div><br/></div>
<div><b>NOTES:</b></div>
<div><br/>1) <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">We're tentatively targeting the morning of June 14th (Pacific) to enable this feature.</span><br/></b><br/>2) This new view is optional to implement, but will definitely increase your app's visibility on Ning networks.<br/><br/>3) <b>IMPORTANT ITEM #1:</b> If you were an early Ning Apps beta participant and your app's XML file contains a reference to the discontinued ning.main view, please be sure to remove the reference if you don't yet want your app to appear on the main page of Ning networks.<br/><br/>4) <b>IMPORTANT ITEM #2:</b> Please note that any <Content> tags that do not specify a view will be displayed on the main page of the Ning Network. If this doesn't make sense for your app, please update your XML file so that it only uses the desired views. For a list of our 3 supported views, please see the <a href="http://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/2997583664?profile=original">attached XML example</a>.</div>
<div><br/>5) The main page view will be displayed in the center column of the network.<br/><br/>6) The maximum width for the view is 492px. Anything smaller will be centered within the column. We currently don't have a limit on height, but will probably restrict this in the future to prevent abuse.<br/><br/>7) The owner of the main page view is the Network Creator.</div>
<div><b><br/>TO DO BEFORE JUNE 14th:</b></div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>If your app isn't affected by IMPORTANT ITEM #1 or IMPORTANT ITEM #2 above (most developers will not be affected), you're all set. You can implement the new main page view whenever you'd like (after June 14th).<br/><br/>If your app IS affected by IMPORTANT ITEM #1 or IMPORTANT ITEM #2 above, please take a quick moment to edit your XML file per the instructions above. This tweak should be completed by the morning of June 14th (Pacific).</div>
<div><b><br/>TO DO AFTER JUNE 14th:</b></div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>If you'd like to implement the new view once it's enabled in mid-June, you can add a test XML URL to a demo network by using the following "Add by URL" feature (replacing "TEST" with your network's subdomain):</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div><i><a href="#">http://TEST.ning.com/opensocial/ningapps/addByUrl</a></i></div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>If everything looks good, you can update your main XML file to enable the new view for your app in the directory.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Thanks!</div>

<div><br/></div>
<div>We've heard a great deal of feedback since introducing Ning Apps last fall, and we're hoping to address many of the developer suggestions/pain points that have been collected. In the interest of setting appropriate timing expectations, we're not assigning specific dates (yet) to the list outlined below, however we'll be sure to communicate updates as soon as they become available.</div>
<div><b><br/></b></div>
<div><b>Here's our plan for upcoming months:</b></div>
<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><br/></span></b></div>
<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">1) Allow Ning Apps to be placed on the Main page of a Ning Network</span></b></div>
<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><br/></span></b></span></b></div>
<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">2) Increase the limit of installable Ning Apps on a network from 5 to 10</span></b></span></b></div>

<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">3) Update our OpenSocial container to include REST support</span></b></span></b></div>
<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><br/></span></b></span></b></div>
<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">4) Introduce a number of new read/write APIs for use by Ning Apps as well as mobile and/or desktop applications</span></b></span></b></div>
<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><br/></span></b></span></b></div>
<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">In addition, we're investigating options that will allow developers to collect one-time and/or ongoing revenue through a direct relationship with Ning. More on this to come.</span></b></span></b></div>
<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><br/></span></b></span></b></div>
<div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">We're excited about our new direction, and look forward to working closely together.</span></b></span></b></div>

This means that developers looking to develop Ning Apps for the first time can take a look at how our team has built some of the Ning Apps used across the millions of Ning Networks available today, and it offers an opportunity for more advanced Ning Apps developers to contribute features and bug fixes, by forking from the central repository. <br/><br/><br/>You can find the repositories here:<br/>Top Friends: <a href="http://github.com/ning/ningapp-topfriends">http://github.com/ning/ningapp-topfriends</a><br/>Twitter Tracker: <a href="http://github.com/ning/ningapp-twittertracker">http://github.com/ning/ningapp-twittertracker</a><br/><br/>Our hope is to have additional Ning Apps available for the developer community soon. Stay tuned!<br/><br/>Thanks,<br/>- Ernie<br/><br/>OpenSocial Documentation v1.0.9 released, now available as HTMLtag:developer.ning.com,2010-02-06:1185512:BlogPost:2561992010-02-06T00:30:00.000ZErnie H.https://developer.ning.com/profile/ErnieH

One of the most proven ways to re-engage your network’s members is to send them periodic emails highlighting recent activity on your site. Now you can <b>add your own automated email newsletter to your Ning site</b> with the free application from <a href="http://nutshellmail.com/ning/" target="_blank">NutshellMail</a>.<br />
<br />
The NutshellMail application, named a <a href="http://blog.ning.com/2009/11/announcing-the-ning-appathon-winners.html" target="_blank">finalist of the 2009 Ning Appathon</a>, gives your users the ability to sign up for a newsletter that highlights recent and featured content from your network. The app places an “Email Newsletter” tab on your network that your members can opt-in to receiving on a schedule of their choosing (as seldom as once a week or as often as three times a day). <i>You can see an example of an email newsletter for the Creator's Network below.</i><br />
<br />
<b>Benefits of the NutshellMail app:</b><br />
• Increase readership and site visits<br />
• Encourage more participation and comments<br />
• No work for you –its fully automated<br />
• It’s Free<br />
<br />
By giving your members the ability to receive periodic updates from your network on their own schedule, the NutshellMail app keeps your members up to date on the latest activity from your network and helps to pull users back into your site. The key is in giving your users 100% of the control. Users choose to sign up and can select how often they want to be notified. In addition, users can choose to add notifications from Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and LinkedIn so that they can monitor activity from all their social networks in single consolidated email digest and will, therefore, open their email newsletter more often.<br />

From making it simple to post a classified ad, to providing a way to visually map members, the Ning Apps created by Apps.IO are adding new and interesting functionality to the Ning Networks they are installed on. Their newest Ning App, Listings, was <a href="http://blog.ning.com/2009/11/announcing-the-ning-appathon-winners.html">a finalist in the Best Original Ning App category</a> in the recently held Ning Appathon competition. Apps.IO President Benjamin Cavanaugh chatted with us about the origin of the company, the apps they’ve created, and offered up some tips for developers looking to get started developing on the Ning Platform.<p></p>
<p><strong>Tell me a little bit about Apps.IO?</strong><br/> <img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-21243" style="float: right; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;" src="http://blog.ning.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/photo-01935734.jpg" alt="photo-01935734" height="244" width="200"/><a href="http://www.apps.io/">Apps.IO</a> develops integrated hosted application features for social websites. Apps.IO’s products range from simple features to social content collaboration systems. In addition to offering free versions of our apps, we also offer premium advertising-free versions of our apps.</p>
<p><strong>How did you decide to start developing on the Ning Platform? How long have you been working with Ning?</strong><br/>
We started developing on the Ning Platform primarily because we saw a significant demand for add-on features for Ning Networks. We’ve been familiar with the Ning Platform since early 2007.</p>
<p><strong>Had you ever used the OpenSocial API before developing?</strong><br/> Actually no. While we had heard about it when it was officially announced, our first introduction to actually using the OpenSocial API was while developing apps for the Ning Apps Platform.</p>
<p><strong>What types of apps have you created? How do you come up with the ideas for your Ning Apps?</strong><br/> To date, we’ve created four apps that are already available in the Ning Apps Directory.</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://developer.ning.com/ningapps/directory/about?appUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fapps.io%2Flistings%2F%3Fning-app-status%3Dnetwork">Listings</a>, our most recent app, allows network members to easily post classified ad listings. It’s very customizable, and supports custom categories and custom listing fields.</li>
<li><a href="http://developer.ning.com/ningapps/directory/about?appUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fapps.io%2Fanswers%2F%3Fning-app-status%3Dnetwork">Answers</a>, a collaboration app, allows members to easily ask questions and crowd-source answers with other members of a network.</li>
<li><a href="http://developer.ning.com/ningapps/directory/about?appUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fapps.io%2Fuser-map%2F%3Fning-app-status%3Dnetwork">Member Map</a>, allows network members to share their location on a network-wide Member Map.</li>
<li><a href="http://developer.ning.com/ningapps/directory/about?appUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fapps.livewired.ws%2Fcontactus%2Findex.php%3Fning-app-status%3Dnetwork">Contact Page</a>, adds a tab to your network with a simple customizable email contact form.</li>
</ul>
<p>Customer feedback is essential when considering what to potentially develop. While we do have a general product road-map, we also have received ideas from customer requests.</p>
<p><strong>Are there particular types of Ning Networks that you have in mind when you choose to develop a given Ning App?</strong><br/> We keep a wide variety of network types in mind throughout the development process, from professional to personal type networks. We also try to offer customization options that allow for an even wider range of uses for our apps.</p>
<p><strong>What advice would you give to people who might be interested in developing on Ning?</strong><br/> If you’re new to developing on Ning, the <a href="http://developer.ning.com/">Ning Developer Network</a> is a great place to start, it’s full of helpful tips as well as links to important OpenSocial related sites. When developing your app, take advantage of the Latest Activity feed to help increase member engagement. It’s key to remember each Ning Network is unique and has its own demands.</p>
<br />
<p><strong>Is there anything else you want to add?</strong><br/> If you’re currently using one of our apps and would like to stay updated about our services, or are interested in learning more about our apps, the best place to start is at our own Ning Network: <a href="http://community.apps.io">The Apps.IO Customer Community</a>.</p>Ning Creators is Live: General Discussion is now read-onlytag:developer.ning.com,2009-11-09:1185512:BlogPost:2461142009-11-09T21:30:00.000ZErnie H.https://developer.ning.com/profile/ErnieH

Reviews - Enable members of a Ning Network to share reviews of restaurants, local businesses and services, electronics, movies, music and more. Or create an app that lets the Network Creator create their own custom reviews application.<br />
<br />
Favorites - A Ning App that lets members of a Ning Network build a list of their favorite things. They can choose from default list types (favorite posts, movies, music, books or TV) or create their own custom favorites type.<br />
<br />
Give Away - Whether you're a Freecycling or Freesharing group that is dedicated to giving stuff away or you're a group that wants to make exchanges possible among people in your Ning Network, an application like this would make it easier for folks to give stuff away.<br />
<br />
Places Map - A way for members of a Ning Network to share information about places that are relevant to the group. You can customize the map to make it about a specific type of place (e.g. restaurants, dog parks or tourist attractions) or leave it open to anything.<br />
<br />
Questions & Answers - Enable members to ask and answer questions<br />
<br />
Quote Me - Create a collection of your group's favorite quotes<br />
<br />
Recipes - Enable recipe sharing among members of a Ning Network<br />

<br />
We are excited to announce that Ning Apps will debut in early September!<br />
<br />
When you create a Ning Network around a specific interest or passion, you need a diverse feature set that allows you to be creative and customize the experience for your members. For example, if you run a Ning Network around a non-profit organization or a cause you care about, you can take a poll with a new Ning App that allows you to check the pulse of your members to better understand what moves them. Then you can use a direct donation Ning App to drive contributions to your cause within your Ning Network.<br />
<br />
By offering more than 90 different applications, Ning Apps provide a unique opportunity for Network Creators to further customize the social experience on their Ning Network based on their goals. This flexibility will allow Ning Network Creators to spark more relevant engagement, enhance collaboration, and conduct e-commerce.<br />
<br />
We want to thank the Network Creators who are participating in our private beta and the application developers who partnered with us to create such a diverse set of features.<br />
<br />

Having a Ning App write to the activity stream (using opensocial.requestCreateActivity) is the most effective way to drive visibility and traffic to your application directly from the main page of a social network.<br />
<br />
We can see opensocial.requestCreateActivity in action by using the OpenSocial Dev App tool; you can install the OpenSocial Dev App tool on a Ning Apps sandbox by going to http://NETWORKNAME.ning.com/opensocial/ningapps/addByUrl to add an XML file manually (replacing NETWORKNAME with the name of your social network) and adding the url <a href="http://gadgetstore.ning.com/gadgets/coderunner/coderunner08.xml" target="_blank">http://gadgetstore.ning.com/gadgets/coderunner/coderunner08.xml</a>. Once the OpenSocial Dev App tool is installed, paste the following code into the development window:<br />
<br />
<code><br />
function postActivity(text) {<br />
var params = {};<br />
params[opensocial.Activity.Field.TITLE] = text;<br />
var activity = opensocial.newActivity(params);<br />
opensocial.requestCreateActivity(activity, opensocial.CreateActivityPriority.HIGH, callback);<br />
};<br />
<br />
function callback(data) {<br />
/* callback is an optional function which is called after requestCreateActivity. */<br />
/* do what you would like with the data attribute. */<br />
document.getElementById("dom_handler").innerHTML = "Latest activity will be shown when you refresh your profile page.";<br />
};<br />
<br />
postActivity("This is a sample activity, created at " + new Date().toString());<br />
</code><br />
<br />
The activity object is created through opensocial.newActivity(), and that object is placed -- along with a callback function -- as a parameter to the opensocial.requestCreateActivity method. The callback function is optional, and is specifically called after requestCreateActivity is invoked.<br />
<br />
Now that you understand how to ping the Latest Activity stream, you can update your OpenSocial code appropriately to ping the latest activity feed on the main page.<br />
<br />
<b>NOTE:</b> The requestCreateActivity API has a quota of 5 invocations per member, per application, per day. This means that a member can call the functionality five times a day for each application. With the exception of the <a>tag, all HTML is stripped from the text before the API is invoked due to abuse prevention purposes.Another Update on Ning Appstag:developer.ning.com,2009-07-14:1185512:BlogPost:2214752009-07-14T19:07:18.000ZErnie H.https://developer.ning.com/profile/ErnieH

I'm working on an Ning application so I started playing with OpenSocial. I have already created a few applications using the Facebook API but I like how 'open' OpenSocial is. Let's see how it goes.

Hi everyone!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://mashable.com/2009/05/06/ning-apps/">As you may have heard</a>, beta testing for Ning Apps are currently underway for a select group of social networks.<br />
<br />
Ning Apps is similar to Profile Apps in that they both use OpenSocial APIs to get data about members of a social network, but Ning Apps contain additional views to show functionality at the main page of a social network, along with additional canvas and profile page views. As Ning is unique to other social network containers, there are also some Ning-specific methods and objects specifically geared towards your social network. (And we'll be adding more of these methods and objects as Ning Apps are further defined.)<br />
<br />
To create a development sandbox, use the following URL:<br />
<a href="http://www.ning.com/main/createyourown?source=networkapplications">http://www.ning.com/main/createyourown?source=networkapplications</a><br />
<br />
The sole purpose of the sandbox is to test your Ning Apps XML file, not to use this as a permanent social network, and content on these social networks can and will change without notice. Also, do not review any Ning Apps through development sandboxes; the Ning Apps Directory on sandboxes are tied directly into the directory on social networks, so any reviews made through sandboxes will also show up there.<br />
<br />
That said, developers can begin reading <a href="http://developer.ning.com/notes/Ning_Apps_Documentation">the Ning Apps documentation</a>, and we plan on adding more examples and tutorials to help developers add additional functionality for social networks everywhere. Stay tuned!<br />
<br />
