Ning Apps vs OpenSocial Java API for integration

I am planning to use Ning as my OpenSocial container for a service I am developing.

I just started reading at the documentation, I have few basic questions:

1. My service requires some information about the social network in Ning like group members, member activity on a discussion, group owner etc. What is the best way to get the information and in what level? If I understand right, I can either send a "POST" request from my service layer (which is in Java) using OpenSocial client API or I integrate at the page level using Ning Apps.

2. If I have to connect using the OpenSocial API, can I use the OpenSocialClient OpenSocial API or should I use POST?
