Ning Developer Network

We have a new release coming on Thursday, September 25 at 6pm PST. This release will include:

1) New Message Center & Friend Request Interface: the Network Inbox and Friend Requests are moving out of the Ningbar and will now be fully integrated into your social network on Ning.

2) Simplified Main & Profile Pages: changes include more space between columns, standardized text size across modules, and the introduction of a blog tab. NOTE: if you have customized your network's CSS, please review these important details.

3) A New iPhone Interface: a supported mobile version of your network, accessible at the domain "http://yourdomain.ning.com/m/". You can read about these in more detail here.

Additionally, we're making some changes of particular interest to developers:

1) Removal of Dojo: jQuery, which has a lighter footprint, more extensive documentation, and a higher amount of plug-ins and extensions, will be replacing the Dojo JavaScript framework.

2) Exclusive support of WebDAV access: SFTP will no longer be available.

For screenshots and further details, check out the Preview.

Thanks!
The Ning Team

[Update: With so many new, improved and modified features coming, we are going to take another week to do further testing and polish it up. As a result, this release is now tentatively scheduled to take place on Thursday, Sep. 25. This will allow us to tackle outstanding issues before — not after — this release goes live on to your networks. We want you and your members to have a flawless transition to this new release, and hopefully you understand the need for the delay. We'll continue to update you as we get closer to the new release date.]

Eric,
You can currently use the URL mapping for your needs as long as your URLs don't interfere with current site urls.

see this link

It's not perfect and I'm sure Ning's new system will be better, but it allows me to make SEO-friendly links to blog postings, pages, etc.

What happened now all of a sudden its Next Thursday Thanks for updating us... First tuesday, then thursday, now next thursday. I"d feel better if you guys were not certain to just not tell us, because how can you set an expectation but fail not once but twice, dont make promises that you guys wont keep, just dont promise us anything... I really should just take a grand and invest into a site developer to create another site than deal with lies

Ugh. I am SO mad! I've been looking forward to this ever since I've heard the news and was disappointed TWICE. It's okay though. I understand the motives you guys have for pushing the date back. I've just been getting really excited because I'm a total nerd.I'll wait though. I hope it's worth it. =]

thank you Dayne... if it's coming in October, I think I will wait. We aren't modifying our code yet, and I would like to put that off as long as possible to keep the automatic updates coming!

Nice URLs would be good but ... See Here

I'm sure there are more worthwhile features to work on than those as well

I mistakingly saved a "Pages" [not notes] (just intending on taking a look at the screen), can I have that removed so I can get auto updates or will that not effect it?

damn, you can't do it right ?

sounds like you pushed it to later again...

if you can't do it, then just don't promise anything, it's so un-professional...

Hi - Any updates on the changes that were due to happen to messaging?

Reply to This

Its great news. Will these updates come automatically or do i have to update? i had done customizations to ning features and also css changes..

How do i find out whether i receive updates automatically or not?

This is a question I have as well. I'm sure things are clear once you've got source access, but I have yet to find a definitive "this is what happens when we release new features" sort of page.

Also, it's the 26th...so, next week? :)

Wondering the same thing, no changes that I see, but worse yet no news on it here!
