I just recieved my source code, and the email told me to go to FTP and gave me the information, maybe I am being ditzy, but when it says "User ID" does this mean my site name, my email address, or my 4 digit code? I am so at lost on this, I've tried it all and nothing is signing me in...

Thanks,
Melly

User id means your email or the name you type to login on your network.

Note that you will need a client that does SFTP, regular FTP will not work, here are some options:

Windows:
http://winscp.net/eng/download.php

Mac:
http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/
http://cyberduck.ch/
http://www.yummysoftware.com/
http://www.panic.com/transmit/

Alternatively, you can use the web interface to edit and upload your files, one other way to access it is: go to www.ning.com > My Networks > View Networks I've Created > Customize (for the network you've asked for the code)

Hello Melissa!

Your login for SFTP is your email address and your password is your normal password (not your PIN).

We actually use a more secure protocol called SFTP which may require a different client than standard FTP. On Mac I've used the command line SFTP command successfully and on Windows I've successfully tested FileZilla.

If you're still having issues with SFTP, you may want to try the Site Editor. Check out this FAQ which discusses it.

Cheers!
Mike

Thank you, I have FileZilla, and I am still not getting in with it :(

However, I have tried the site editor, and I can't do what I need to do... Or I can't really see what I need anywho... I am trying to change the themes t hat are for others to use... Or add more...

Have you checked the FileZilla wiki? Item 1 on their usage page has some directions for connecting with SFTP: http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Using

FileZilla should work fine with SFTP.

Yup tried that, but its still not loging me in...

I put "22" in the port, and it disappears when I press enter.

Hi Melissa,

Try the Site Manager instead of the quickconnect, here is how:

- Click on the top-left corner little computer:

- Select SFTP as the Servertype and Normal as Logontype

- Accept the key if prompted:

Yeah, did all this, and I have tried it about 5 times just after reading this, and its still not work... Same error message. The 22 stayed this time, but it won't connect.

It might be necessary to check your settings for Windows firewall or other firewalls to make sure that FileZilla isn't blocked.

Ug, I have no clue on that what I am looking for, I don't' even know how to get to all that, my husband will have to help on that part lol...

Hey Melissa,

Lets try to isolate the root cause. First off, what's the error message that you see? Thanks for posting that screen shot, but it's a bit too small for me to read!

Next, lets verify that you can connect using a very simple tool: Telnet. Open a command prompt or terminal and type the following:
telnet sftp.ning.com 22
You should see something like this:
Trying 8.6.19.68...Connected to sftp.ning.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
SSH-2.0-ssh/sftp server v0.1
Please let us know what you see especially if it's nothing, connection refused, or a timeout message.

Thanks!
Mike

I'm actually experiencing the same (related?) problem.

Filezilla opens a connection, exchanges some data (it asked me if I was happy, and then hangs there. WebDrive fails with

---------------------------
WebDrive
---------------------------
Unable to connect to Site ning, Can't establish SFTP connection, (1609 - SSH Handshake failed with remote host. Recheck your username and password (or hostkey file if one is in use). Also make sure you have selected Ciphers/MACs that are compatible with those on the server. (Error 1609)
Suberror: -2147467259, sshlibSrSshClient::SSH_Handshake: Remote disconnected without sending a disconnect message)

However, I can successfully connect with sftp from cygwin from the same machine, so it doesn't seem to be a network issue.

if your cygwin's sftp works it might be a Filezilla problem then, do you know where it keeps the known hosts file? You might want to try WinSCP then...
