i want to create a chat application in my network.

Can anybody help me, whats the best way or what to do so that my network will have a chatting area? or chatting application in my network? so that the members in my network could chat directly to the online members... and what is the codes, to see who is online in the network? so that the members could directly see who is online... plzzz help me... i would appreciate your help...
