The Ning Appathon is a week-long OpenSocial development competition with prizes for both original and ported applications.Judges include: Marc AndreessenNing Chairman and Co-founderChris AndersonWired magazine Editor-in-Chief Robert ScobleBlogger and Managing Director of building43WHERE
The competition is open to participants worldwide. Please read through the official rules and the Ning Apps documentation, and feel free to use the “OpenSocial Development” section of our forum for assistance.WHEN
The competition began at our kickoff event on November 5th. All entries were due by 10pm PST on Thursday, November 12th.Winners will be announced on Thursday, November 19th.PRIZES
The Grand Prize for Best Original App is $5,000 (US). The Grand Prize for Best Ported App is $4,000 (US). Two Original App and Ported App finalists (4 total) will each receive $500 (US). All six winners will also receive prominent editorial placement in the Ning Apps directory.

Does it cost anything to participate?
Nope. There is no entry fee, and no purchase or obligation
necessary to enter or win.
Can teams submit entries?
Absolutely. See the
official rules for details, but entries may be submitted upon
behalf of yourself, as a team, or on behalf of an entity.
What criteria/best practices should I follow when
building my app?
The Social Design Best Practices list is a great
start. Additionally, we recommend making use of the following
techniques:
- Use opensocial.requestCreateActivity to write to the social network’s Latest Activity feed and drive engagement
- Use gadgets.skins to let your app seamlessly blend into the surrounding social network's visual style
Have any app ideas?
You’re in luck. We've been collecting feedback from our Network
Creators, and here are a few potential suggestions to help you
brainstorm:
- Reviews - Enable members of a Ning Network to share reviews of restaurants, local businesses and services, electronics, movies, music and more. Or create an app that lets the Network Creator create their own custom reviews application.
- Favorites - A Ning App that lets members of a Ning Network build a list of their favorite things. They can choose from default list types (favorite posts, movies, music, books or TV) or create their own custom favorites type.
- Give Away - Whether you're a Freecycling or Freesharing group that is dedicated to giving stuff away or you're a group that wants to make exchanges possible among people in your Ning Network, an application like this would make it easier for folks to give stuff away.
- Places Map - A way for members of a Ning Network to share information about places that are relevant to the group. You can customize the map to make it about a specific type of place (e.g. restaurants, dog parks or tourist attractions) or leave it open to anything.
- Questions & Answers - Enable members to ask and answer questions
- Quote Me - Create a collection of your group's favorite quotes
- Recipes - Enable recipe sharing among members of a Ning Network
